o twitter my twitter
To be honest, I love Twitter. I like the community on the app and the people I come across. Some are really interesting to interact with, some are on the different sides of the spectrum. If you follow the right accounts, you would come across interesting information and insights. Moreover, you are on the top of the information age, more like on things you care about.
Twitter does also have its bad side now and then where your interaction is decided by its algorithms. But I would still have a Twitter account. Not any particular reason, just that once in a while I come across amazing people and learn a lot from them. Some people become friends for life.
Often people complain about how much of a brain-rot Twitter has become lately. The problem is that we are never taught how to use social media as a tool. Also, lately there has been a lot of hate against Indians, more click-baiting and engagement-baiting posts because of how Twitter decides who they want to give payout to for posting. Everybody wants to jump the train. It has created a different kind of audience altogether.
I started Twitter as a part of my machine learning grind (but it wasn't really a grind at all) where I would post my daily learning updates. Then I got greedy and decided to chase some followers since Twitter pays? (But that's not actually completely true, since you need to have some minimum requirements). I stayed on the app for the people, and shitposting. It is a good vent. Feeling low? Tweet about it. Frustrated? Tweet about it. Happy? Tweet about it. Won a Nobel? Tweet about it.
However, Twitter does take a dark turn in your life sometimes. One particular example would be waking up, checking Twitter as the first thing, then keep scrolling the app, then go do something else while scrolling the app again!
I have started to write a blog and hope the transition period will be slow. A blog is non-addictive. I can finally give my Twitter account some rest and do a little bit of Instagram, which I don't want to go back to (I do have an account there to connect with college people).
Update (11 June, 2025):
I deleted all the main accounts and created a small alt account for lurking purpose. I am not missing out on anything and my usage also reduced because I don't have anyone to tweet for, or to display it to people. I still follow close people from the new account and try to keep my interaction to the minimum.
